beginner course outline

here is a suggested order for working through the videos i’ve posted. i’ve tried to suggest certain tunes to go along with the relevant technique taught in a preceding video.

 

technique lesson:

introduction to bowing

learn simple rhythms, throwaway bow and string changing in this video.

introduction to fingering lesson 1

introduction to fingering lesson 2
learn how to use the first, second and third fingers on the D string as well as the tune bile ‘em cabbage down.

 

next, pick one or more of the following tunes to learn:

you'll learn how to get better at left hand fingering by practicing wider intervals (bigger jumps then the small steps you take on a scale).

bowing technique lesson:

the slur

the slur is playing 2 or more notes in a single bow stroke. it makes your playing sound smoother.

 

next, pick one or more of the following tunes to learn:

o’Keefe’s slide

will the Circle Be Unbroken, singing and playing

ballydesmond polka (lower octave)

cripple creek

tennessee waltz

 

practice lesson:

review

for 1-2 weeks don't learn any new songs. focus on reviewing all the tunes you've learned, working to make them sound better. use looping and throw-away bow. play each song at least 4 times in a row.
